Pet Sitters International Offers Safety Tips In Case Of Natural Disasters

As tornado season gives way to hurricane season, flooding and wildfires, Pet Sitters International (PSI) re4minds pet owners to be ready and plan ahead for possible natural disasters. PSI, the world’s largest educational association for professional pet sitters, reminds pet owners to understand the possibilities for disaster in their particular areas especially during summer travel and vacation times. Pet owners must prepare ahead especially when they are away.

Patti Moran, founder and president of Pet Sitters International, said that owners must make sure their pets wears current identification at all times like owner’s cell phone and pet sitter’s cell number to your pet’s tag. “Also, know where you can take your pet in the event of an emergency. Look into pet-friendly evacuation shelters and hotels outside a 60-mile radius of your home ahead of time.”

When your pets are left in the care of pet sitters, you must stock needed supplies such as extra leashes, bowls, accessories and a minimum of a five-day supply of pet food and water. It is also important that you communicate your emergency plans to the pet sitter.

PSI have provided valuable information on disaster preparation for Pet Owners in their Web site. “Professional pet sitters are trained to ask all the right questions and remain passionate about caring for animals, especially in times of danger,” says Moran. PSI offers its members continuing education on subjects such as pet first aid, disaster planning and spotting potential dangers within a client’s home.
